MATCH REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 2-0 FLEETWOOD TOWN

9 December 2017

First half goals from Nick Powell and Dan Burn secure victory against the Cod Army

  • Match report: Wigan Athletic 2-0 Fleetwood Town.
  • Nick Powell opened the scoring after seven minutes.
  • Dan Burn added a second before the break.

Wigan Athletic extended their lead at the top of the third tier to four points with a comfortable win over Fleetwood Town at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

Nick Powell netted the game’s opener in the seventh minute when his powerful header inside the area beat Alex Cairns and found the bottom corner.

Defender Dan Burn got himself on the scoresheet before the half was out, heading past Cairns in the 38th minute to put Latics in control.

Paul Cook made three changes to his team for the visit of the Cod Army, with Christian Walton, Ryan Colclough and Powell all starting.

Latics started the game well and went ahead early on through Powell, who rose highest in the box to meet Lee Evans’ cross and head home.

In reply, Ash Eastham went close from a corner soon after, but it was Cook’s men who were threatening the most, with Michael Jacobs and Reece James seeing efforts blocked well.

Jack Sowerby looked dangerous going forward for Uwe Rosler’s outfit and he was twice denied in dangerous areas by the Latics defence.

The lead was doubled before the break when Burn netted his second goal of the campaign as he headed Evans’ cross beyond Cairns.

Devante Cole curled an effort just over the target at the start of the second period as the Cod Army looked for a way back into the game.

Powell then looked to add to his afternoon’s tally but couldn’t squeeze his shot on target from the right hand side.

Cook freshened things up midway through the half when he brought Max Power and Gavin Massey on, with the former making his 100th Latics appearance.

The home side were playing some really good football, and Power nearly made an instant impact off the bench but was denied by Cairns.

Latics had further opportunities to extend their lead, however will be happy with their afternoon’s work ahead of Tuesday night’s FA Cup replay against AFC Fylde.

Latics: Walton, Byrne, Morsy (Capt), Evans, Grigg (Massey), Jacobs, Dunkley, Powell (Toney 78), James, Colclough (Power 66), Burn.

Unused subs: Sarkic, Elder, Bruce, Roberts.

Fleetwood Town: Cairns, Coyle, Bell, Eastham, Pond (Capt), Dempsey (Biggins 56), Bolger, Glendon, Schwabl (Hiwula 45), Sowerby (Hunter 72), Cole.
