KICK OFF 3.00pm

PRE-MATCH BUILD UP

Confidence must be oozing through the Wigan Athletic dressing room following Saturday’s historic 7-0 victory away at Oxford United, when a hat-trick from Will Grigg, two from Max Power and one each for Nick Powell and Gavin Massey secured Latics’ biggest ever victory in the EFL and a fifth straight win in Sky Bet League One.

Speaking to iFollow Latics after the game, manager Paul Cook said that no matter how delighted his team are with the seven goals, they know they’re up against their biggest challenge of the season when Shrewsbury Town visit the DW Stadium.

“We have to stay focused now; a big, strong Christmas would be great for us all but if you get ahead of yourself in this game, it changes quickly.

“Whatever will be on Boxing Day, will be. It will be a good game, two competitive teams, contrasting styles, Shrewsbury have had an outstanding half season, we have had an outstanding half season, but we have both achieved nothing.”

Match Reports

MATCH REPORT: LATICS 0 - 0 SHREWSBURY TOWN

26 December 2017

Paul Cook's side extend unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.

  • Match Report: Wigan Athletic vs Shrewsbury Town.
  • Top of the table clash ends all square at the DW Stadium.
  • Latics remain four points ahead of Paul Hurst's outfit.

An entertaining Boxing Day encounter between the top two in League One ended goalless at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

Following Saturday’s record-breaking win over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium, Cook named an unchanged side for the visit of Salop.

Abu Ogogo had the game’s first chance when Alex Rodman delivered an inviting cross into the area, but the midfielder could only head over Christian Walton’s bar.

Latics later went close to opening the scoring through Will Grigg, but his header from Nathan Byrne’s cross clipped the top of Dean Henderson’s goal.

The duo were involved again before the half hour mark when the Northern Ireland international raced on to Byrne’s ball only to be denied at a tight angle by Henderson.

Cook’s side continued to put the pressure on their opponents, with Dan Burn going close at the near post and Lee Evans dragging an effort just wide from distance.

Nick Powell made space for himself inside the box just before the interval and forced Henderson into a low save at his near post but the sides went in all square at the break.

Rodman had an opportunity for Salop early in the second period, but blasted over from the right hand side after being played through on goal.

In response, Powell’s free kick from 20 yards deflected just over Henderson’s goal while from the resulting corner the same player headed wide inside the box.

With 20 minutes remaining, Jon Nolan thought he had found a breakthrough for his side but his strike from the edge of the area deflected narrowly wide.

Substitutes Max Power and Ivan Toney both almost made immediate impacts, with the former ratlling the bar and the latter shooting wide inside the box.

Despite a valiant effort to net late on, Latics were denied in their attempts by a resolute visiting backline and were made to settle for point.

Wigan Athletic: Walton; Byrne, Dunkley, Burn, James; Morsy (Capt), Evans; Massey (Hunt 90), Powell (Power 84), Jacobs; Grigg (Toney 78).

Subs not used: Sarkic, Elder, Bruce, Roberts.

Shrewsbury Town: Henderson; Bolton, Sadler, Beckles, Nsiala; Ogogo (Capt), Godfrey; Whalley, Nolan (Morris 90), Rodman; C. Morris (Payne 76).

Subs not used: MacGillivray, Riley, Dodds, Gnahoua, John-Lewis.
