Confidence must be oozing through the Wigan Athletic dressing room following Saturday’s historic 7-0 victory away at Oxford United, when a hat-trick from Will Grigg, two from Max Power and one each for Nick Powell and Gavin Massey secured Latics’ biggest ever victory in the EFL and a fifth straight win in Sky Bet League One.
Speaking to iFollow Latics after the game, manager Paul Cook said that no matter how delighted his team are with the seven goals, they know they’re up against their biggest challenge of the season when Shrewsbury Town visit the DW Stadium.
“We have to stay focused now; a big, strong Christmas would be great for us all but if you get ahead of yourself in this game, it changes quickly.
“Whatever will be on Boxing Day, will be. It will be a good game, two competitive teams, contrasting styles, Shrewsbury have had an outstanding half season, we have had an outstanding half season, but we have both achieved nothing.”
Latics are at almost full strength following Saturday’s 7-0 victory at Oxford United, with only the longer term injuries of Craig Morgan and Shaun MacDonald still remaining, as Jamie Jones continues to recover from a shoulder problem.

Latics’ record-breaking 7-0 victory away to Oxford on Saturday maintained their four point lead over today’s visitors, who secured back-to-back home victories without conceding when they beat Portsmouth 2-0 thanks to goals from Shaun Whalley and Stefan Payne.
Both sides put distance between themselves and third place Blackburn Rovers, who came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at Northampton Town in the day’s early kick off.
Latics and Salop are 16 and 12 points respectively above joint seventh and eighth place Peterborough United and Portsmouth who sit just outside the play-off places.
League: Latics 3 wins, Shrewsbury 3 wins, 5 draws – 14 scored, 12 conceded
Latics’ home record: 1 win, 3 draw, 1 defeat
Clashes between the two have been close-fought affairs at the DW Stadium and Springfield Park, with Latics only coming out on top once in five home league meetings. Latics’ only home triumph over Salop came in the 2015-16 League One title winning season thanks to a single first half goal from on-loan forward Alex Revell.
Our first three home league fixtures against Town ended in draws, 0-0 in October 1989, 2-2 in March 1991 and 1-1 in December 1991, before falling to a 5-2 defeat at Springfield Park in November 1993.
