PRE-MATCH BUILD UP

It’s a battle of two in-form teams this afternoon in Sky Bet League One, as Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic take on Steve Lovell’s Gillingham at the DW Stadium.

Latics are unbeaten in 15 matches in all competitions, 10 have which have earned them the leading spot in the league table, whilst the Gills arrive at the DW unbeaten in their last eight games, rocketing them up through mid-table.

Cook’s men are fresh off the back of an impressive 2-0 victory over Premier League West Ham United in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup, earning Latics a tasty tie against top flight leaders Manchester City later this month.

Lovell’s Gills have won their last four matches, including a 2-1 victory at home against Fleetwood Town last Saturday.

MATCH REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 2-0 GILLINGHAM

3 February 2018

Goals from Will Grigg and Nick Powell seal victory over The Gills

  • Match Report: Wigan Athletic 2-0 Gillingham.
  • Will Grigg on target for his 50th goal in a Latics shirt.
  • Nick Powell has 12 for the season in all competitions.

Wigan Athletic extended their unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One this afternoon as they comfortably saw off the challenge of Gillingham at the DW Stadium.

Will Grigg’s fine form continued when he put Latics ahead early on, meeting Reece James's low cross to net inside the six-yard box for his 50th goal for the club.

Powell made it two just after the half hour mark when he rose highest in the area to head Max Power’s corner past Tomas Holy.

Following last weekend’s Emirates FA Cup win against West Ham, Paul Cook made two changes to his side with left back James and Ryan Colclough starting instead of Callum Elder and Gavin Massey.

Powell forced an opening for himself early on as he played a one-two with Michael Jacobs but was denied by a last-ditch visiting challenge in the area.

Powell went close again soon after when he made space for himself some 20 yards from goal, only to see his dipping effort fly just over Holy’s goal.

Latics deservedly found the net in the 10th minute though when Northern Ireland international Grigg was on hand in the area to tap home James’ inviting low cross.

For the visitors, Tom Eaves saw an effort come back off the post, while Callum Reilly broke into the box and forced Christian Walton into a good stop.

Cook’s side were creating a number of opportunities themselves, with Powell twice going close before Jacobs dragged a shot wide from a good position.

The lead was doubled just after the half hour mark when Powell met Power’s sublime corner to head past Holy for his 12th goal of the season in all competitions.

In the second half, Holy had to be alert to deny Powell from a tight angle, while Jacobs cut in from the left and shot against the post.

Jacobs was causing the visitors all sorts of problems with his pace and trickery and later presented Grigg with a chance at his near post but he was denied by Max Ehmer.

Dan Burn sent a header wide of the mark and Jacobs shot off target, while at the other end substitute Elliott List was thwarted by Walton.

Powell almost added to the scoreline late on but Power’s cross from the right was inches away from his outstretched boot at the back post.

Wigan Athletic: Walton; Byrne, Burn, Dunkley, James; Morsy, Power; Colclough (Walker 55), Powell (Fulton 83), Jacobs; Grigg (Vaughan 65).

Subs not used: Jones, Elder, Bruce, Roberts.

Gillingham: Holy; O'Neill, Garmston, Ehmer, Zakuani; Hessenthaler, Martin (Moussa 72), Parker (List 59), Reilly, Byrne; Eaves (Wilkinson).

Subs not used: Hadler, Ogilvie, Nugent, Nash.
