PRE-MATCH BUILD UP

Latics return to Sky Bet League One action this weekend against relegation threatened Rochdale at the DW Stadium following their Emirates FA Cup triumph over Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Paul Cook's side are aiming to get back on track in the league following back-to-back defeats to Southend United and Blackpool, with the victory over Man City sure to provide a timely boost.

For Keith Hill's Rochdale it will be a similar feeling, albeit they had a 0-0 draw with MK Dons sandwiched in between their FA Cup heroics against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday and Saturday's visit to the DW.

MATCH REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 1-0 ROCHDALE

24 February 2018

Michael Jacobs netted his eighth goal of the campaign with a fine finish.

  • Match Report: Wigan Athletic 1-0 Rochdale.
  • Michael Jacobs netted the game's only goal in the first half.
  • Paul Cook made seven changes to the team that beat Manchester City.

Wigan Athletic returned to winning ways in Sky Bet League One this afternoon as they beat Rochdale at the DW Stadium.

Captain Michael Jacobs put Latics in front early on when he latched on to Jamie Walker’s neat flick down the left to fire low past Josh Lillis in the Dale goal.

Manager Paul Cook made seven changes to the team that knocked Manchester City out of the Emirates FA Cup on Monday evening, with Donervon Daniels, Reece James, Jay Fulton, Ryan Colclough and James Vaughan all starting, along with Jacobs and Walker.

A slow start to proceedings, Colclough had the first real meaningful opportunity of the game on 10 minutes when he burst forward and tested Josh Lillis with a strike from distance.

Latics went ahead moments later as Jacobs raced on to Walker’s flick to finish confidently past Lillis for his eighth league goal of the campaign.

The goal gave Cook’s men confidence and the lead could have been extended when Vaughan headed over at the back post before Walker forced Lillis into a fine save at his near post.

For Keith Hill’s side, Ian Henderson wasted an opportunity midway through the half when he fired wide from a good position inside the box.

Walker was excellent for Latics and was unfortunate not to open his account before the break, firing just over the mark from a tight angle having rounded Lillis.

Jacobs was denied by Lillis at the start of the second period as he cut in from the right and forced the keeper to beat his effort to safety.

Henderson then headed over at the back post for Dale before Steven Davies had an effort blocked superbly inside the six-yard box.

Good work from Gavin Massey down the right later provided Max Power with a shooting opportunity, but the midfielder fired off target from 20 yards.

Power struck the upright with just over 10 minutes to go as his curled strike from the edge of the box came back off the crossbar.

Latics continued to press for the second goal that would have put the game beyond doubt, with Massey driving an effort wide of the post, but Cook's side defended well late on as they held on for victory.

Latics: Walton, Power, Walker (Massey 63), Vaughan (Grigg 75), Daniels, Jacobs, Dunkley, James, Colclough (Perkins 62), Fulton, Burn

Subs not used: Jones, Cole, Bruce, Roberts.

Rochdale: Lillis, McNulty (Davies 41), McGahey, Camps (Knott 59), Wiseman, Rathbone (Hart 54), Done, Delaney, Cannon, Kitching, Henderson.

Subs not used: Moore, Humphreys, Thompson, Inman.
