PRE-MATCH BUILD UP

Latics return to the DW Stadium for the first time in 2018 this weekend as they welcome Peterborough United in Sky Bet League One.

Fresh off the back of an excellent performance against AFC Bournemouth in the Emirates FA Cup, Latics have added to their ranks, bringing in winger Jamie Walker from Hearts and striker James Vaughan from Sunderland.

Paul Cook was delighted to bring in new faces after the departures of Lee Evans and Ivan Toney who returned to their parent clubs before moves elsewhere.

TEAM NEWS

Latics are almost at full strength heading into their clash with Posh, but a knock in a practice match has pushed Shaun MacDonald’s return to action back slightly after appearing in a match squad for the first time in nine months against his former club Bournemouth last Saturday.

Ryan Colclough has now fully recovered from his shoulder injury, and Craig Morgan continues to step up his training.

Grant McCann’s Peterborough are also aiming high this season, pushing hard for a place in the play-offs.  Posh sit ninth on 39 points, two behind sixth place Portsmouth as things stand.  They’ll have to wrestle their way past fellow contenders Charlton Athletic and Rotherham United who sit eighth and seventh respectively.

Latics are unbeaten at home against Posh in eight league meetings and also triumphed 2-1 at Springfield Park in the two clubs’ first ever match in the FA Cup back in the 1970-71 campaign.

Paul Cook’s side will look to be the first Latics team to beat Posh at home since 2002 however, with our previous two meetings at the DW Stadium ending in draws.

Andy Liddell was on target twice in our last home win against Peterborough, one of which was this stunning effort, brushing off Jimmy Bullard in the process.

Match Reports

MATCH REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 0 - 0 PETERBOROUGH UNITED

13 January 2018

Latics and Posh made to share the spoils at the DW Stadium.

  • Match Report: Wigan Athletic 0 - 0 Peterborough United.
  • New signing James Vaughan made his debut as a second half substitute.
  • Latics are next in action against AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

Wigan Athletic extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 games as they played out a goalless draw against Peterborough United at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

Paul Cook named an unchanged side for the visit of Posh, with James Vaughan on the bench along with Jamie Jones and Ryan Colclough who returned from injury.

Before the game, an impeccably observed minute’s silence was held in memory of former player Juan Carlos Garcia, who sadly passed away earlier in the week.

Michael Jacobs had an early chance for Latics when Will Grigg pulled the ball back to him in the box, but his effort was blocked well by a visiting defender.

Jacobs was causing Posh right back Liam Shephard all sorts of problems down the left, and was denied again shortly after by a vital challenge in the area.

Jonathan Bond had to be alert to Jacobs’ fierce strike on the half hour mark when the winger cut inside from 20 yards and forced the keeper to beat his effort away.

Chey Dunkley then had an opportunity in the box but he flicked wide, while Nick Powell was prevented by a last ditch tackle after shrugging his marker off well.

Posh were a threat on the counter without really testing Latics; Marcus Maddison with a half chance before the break but he acrobatically volleyed off target.

In the second half, Dan Burn, Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for December, found himself in space in the box but his deflected strike went wide of the near post.

Christian Walton had to be at his very best to keep out Jack Marriott’s effort soon after, as the striker let fly from distance and forced the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee into a low save.

Gavin Massey then went close for Latics as he latched onto Grigg’s through ball and made Bond pull off a smart stop at his near post.

Vaughan came on for his debut on the hour when he replaced Grigg, while Colclough also made an appearance as he was introduced for Massey.

Colclough missed an opportunity on the edge of the area, Jacobs was thwarted inside the box and Powell’s shot was deflected wide as Latics continued to create chances.

Marriott had the ball in the net for the visitors late on but the his strike was ruled out for offside as the game ended goalless.

Wigan Athletic: Walton; Byrne, Burn, Dunkley, James; Morsy, Power; Massey (Colclough 63), Powell, Jacobs (Elder 86); Grigg (Vaughan 63).

Subs not used: Jones, Perkins, Bruce, Roberts.

Peterborough United: Bond; Shephard, Hughes, Tafazolli, Doughty (Ward 68), Taylor; Grant, Forrester; Maddison, Marriott, Lloyd (Morias 68).

Subs not used: O'Malley, Baldwin, Penny, Anderson, Kanu.
