Match Reports

REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 3 - 3 SCUNTHORPE UNITED

10 March 2018

Gary Roberts' first Latics goal earns Paul Cook's side a late point at home to Scunthorpe United at the DW Stadium.

  • Match Report: Wigan Athletic 3 - 3 Scunthorpe United
  • Chey Dunkley, Will Grigg and Gary Roberts on target for Latics
  • Roberts’ first Latics goal gets Latics a late leveller

Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe United played out a six-goal thriller at the DW Stadium this afternoon, with Gary Roberts’ late goal earning Latics a deserved point.

Defender Chey Dunkley put Latics ahead inside quarter of an hour as he met Max Power’s sublime corner to head past Matt Gilks.

The lead lasted all of three minutes, though, as the visitors equalised through Tom Hopper who beat Christian Walton having initially been denied by the post.

Will Grigg gave Latics the advantage on 43 minutes, firing Michael Jacobs’ cross into the bottom corner but Hopper netted his second of the game in first half added time.

The Iron went in front early in the second period as Ivan Toney smashed the ball past Walton after Ryan Yates’ header had crashed back off the upright.

Substitute Roberts pulled Latics level in the 86th minute as he finished well on the angle to drill the ball past Gilks for his first goal for the club.

Paul Cook made two changes to his Latics side, with left back Reece James and midfielder David Perkins coming in for Callum Elder and Gavin Massey respectively.

Latics started brightly and Grigg had an opportunity from close range early on, but he skewed an effort wide of the mark from a tight angle.

Jacobs later got the beating of Iron defender Neal Bishop in the box, only to head Nathan Byrne’s excellent cross from the right just over.

The opener arrived on 13 minutes courtesy of Dunkley, who powered a header past Gilks for his fourth league goal of the campaign.

Scunthorpe equalised moments later through Hopper, who had already been denied by the post, as he nodded home from close range.

Dunkley then headed just over from another corner, while Power’s deliveries from set-pieces were causing the visitors all sorts of problems, Murray Wallace doing well to deny a scoring opportunity.

Grigg put Latics back in front just before the break as he met Jacobs’ cross from the left to fire home inside the area, however Hopper replied almost immediately with a header at the back post.

At the start of the second half, Jacobs’ header was cleared off the line, Nick Powell fired just wide with a low strike from distance and Dan Burn headed over as Latics created chances.

Despite a number of opportunities, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 53rd minute as Toney found the net from eight yards out after Yates’ header rebounded back off the bar.

James Vaughan was introduced on the hour but chances were few and far between as the game turned scrappy, Grigg’s low shot midway through the half the only real opportunity of note.

Latics continued to battle and their efforts were rewarded four minutes from time when substitute Roberts was played in down the left and calmly slotted past Gilks.

A frantic finale followed with both sides pushing men forward in search of a winner, however both sides were made to settle for a point apiece.

Latics: Walton; Byrne (Roberts 82), Burn, Dunkley, James (Bruce 61); Morsy, Power; Perkins (Vaughan 61), Powell, Jacobs; Grigg.

Subs: Jones, Massey, Walker, Fulton.

Scunthorpe: Gilks; Wallace, Burgess, McArdle, Ojo, Morris, Bishop, Toney, Holmes, Yates, Hopper.

Subs: Watson, Townsend, Goode, Crofts, Adelakun, McGeehan, Wootton.
