REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 0 – 4 ACCRINGTON STANLEY

7 November 2017

Latics exit the Checkatrade Trophy after defeat to Accrington Stanley at the DW Stadium.

  • Young Latics side defeated by Stanley at the DW Stadium.
  • Three youngsters were handed their full first team debuts.
  • Jensen Weir becomes the club’s youngest ever player at 15-years-old.

A youthful Wigan Athletic outfit were beaten at home by Accrington Stanley in the Checkatrade Trophy this evening.

Stanley went ahead through Jonny Edwards after 11 minutes as he latched on to Erico De Sousa’s cross and fired home on the half volley inside the area.

De Sousa himself then extended the advantage on 30 minutes when he shot from the right hand side of the box and found the net.

In the second half, De Sousa made space for himself in the area and added a third with a low finish into the bottom corner.

Mekhi McLeod made it four for Stanley in the final moments as he scored inside the area.

Theo Roberts, Anthony Plant and Will McGuffie were all handed their first team debuts by Paul Cook for the clash against John Coleman’s side.

The visitors opened the scoring early on when Edwards met De Sousa’s cross from the right and beat debutant Roberts with an effort that went in off the bar.

Luke Burgess later went close with a shot inside the area, while Tylor Golden’s low cross for Mwiya Malumo was cleared from danger at the near post.

De Sousa was a threat for Stanley down the right and got himself on the scoresheet on the half hour mark as he netted from the edge of the area.

Latics had opportunities through Divin Baningime and Golden before the break but Stanley held on to their two-goal cushion with a solid defensive display.

De Sousa scored his second of the night shortly after the restart when his low strike from 18 yards found the bottom corner.

Scottish midfielder Jensen Weir became the club’s youngest ever player at 15 years of age when he replaced McGuffie as a second half substitute.

Latics were playing some neat football despite the scoreline, and went close to pulling a goal back through James Barrigan who shot narrowly wide from 20 yards.

McLeod scored a fourth for Stanley late on as Latics exited the Checkatrade Trophy.
