MATCH PREVIEW

Latics face a first-ever meeting against Crawley Town on Saturday as the League Two side travel up from Sussex in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Paul Cook's side are currently on an eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions, sitting second in League One and having not lost in 14 matches at the DW Stadium.

Pit that against a Crawley side with just two goals in seven matches and just four wins in their last 26 games and you have a home banker... but this is the FA Cup and that's not how it works.

Cook spoke in his pre-match press conference about the importance of maintaining form and rhythm, stating he will name a strong side with the aim of being in the hat for the Second Round draw on Monday night.

Crawley will hope a cup run could add some spark to their season and Crawley boss Harry Kewell, an FA Cup winner in 2006, says his side will be in for a tough game, albeit he's positive they can get a result.

"Obviously it’s going to be a difficult tie but looking at how they set up they will try and play and that might suit us rather than having go to a non-league team where it’s all a bit of an unknown," he told Crawley's official website.

"Our away record is good and while we know our concentration levels will have to be at their best for 90-plus minutes on Saturday we do feel we can get a positive result.”

TEAM NEWS

Paul Cook confirmed on Friday that Will Grigg will get some minutes whilst Michael Jacobs will be rested to avoid risking his thigh after recently recovering from a strain.

Otherwise, Christian Walton, Craig Morgan and Shaun MacDonald are longer-term absentees.

Special Lee Evans strike takes Latics into the Second Round of the Emir

  • Match Report: Wigan Athletic 2 - 1 Crawley Town
  • Ivan Toney and Lee Evans goals take Latics into the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup
  • Latics now nine unbeaten in all competitions.

Wigan Athletic progressed to the second round of the FA Cup this afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Harry Kewell’s Crawley Town outfit at the DW Stadium.

The visitors went ahead through Jordan Roberts after 20 minutes as he turned in the box and struck an effort into the top corner.

Ivan Toney levelled just before the half hour mark when Lee Evans’ pinpoint cross found the striker in the area and he beat Glenn Morris from close range.

Evans got himself on the scoresheet on 70 minutes when he unleashed a 25-yard strike which flew into the net.

Latics boss Paul Cook made four changes to his side for the visit of the Red Devils, with Matija Sarkic, Alex Bruce, Gary Roberts and Evans all starting.

It was Roberts who had the game’s first real chance when he burst into the area and forced Glenn Morris into a good save from close range.

Toney and Gavin Massey later had opportunities, with the former shooting into the side netting from a tight angle and the latter curling an effort wide of the far post from distance.

The visitors took the lead however on 20 minutes when Roberts chested the ball down and volleyed home emphatically inside the area.

Crawley’s lead didn’t last long though as Evans raced down the left and whipped a ball in for Toney to smash past Morris.

Nick Powell went close to putting his ahead before the break when he skipped a couple of challenges and shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Toney was inches away from giving Latics the lead after the interval when he cut in on his left foot in the box but shot against the upright.

The turnaround was complete 20 minutes from time when Evans’s stunning long range strike beat Morris in the visiting goal.

Latics had opportunities to extend their lead through substitutes David Perkins and Will Grigg, but they were twice denied by Crawley’s backline.

Wigan Athletic: Sarkic; Byrne, Bruce, Burn, James; Morsy (Capt), Evans (Colclough 81); Roberts, Powell, Massey (Perkins 73); Toney (Grigg 73).
Subs: Jones, Dunkley, Power, Hunt.

Crawley Town: Morris; Lelan, Young, Doherty (Clifford 80), Connolly, McNerney; Bulman (Tajbakhsh 74), Roberts (Verheydt 60), Smith (Capt); Boldewijn, Camara.
Subs: Mersin, Lewis, Payne.
