Latics look to bounce back on Tuesday night when they face Charlton Athletic at The Valley

  • Match Preview: Charlton Athletic v Wigan Athletic.
  • Latics take on The Addicks at The Valley
  • Paul Cook's side looking to become first Wigan Athletic side to win at Charlton.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC v WIGAN ATHLETIC
THE VALLEY
SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
TUESDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2017
KICK OFF 7.45pm

PRE-MATCH BUILD UP
After dropping just two points from the first four matches of the Sky Bet League One campaign, Paul Cook’s side will be looking to get back to winning ways on Tuesday after Saturday’s first defeat of the campaign at Shrewsbury.

The in-form Addicks pose a huge challenge, however, they are on a run of four successive victories, which have taken them into second place in the table, five points ahead of Latics, albeit having played a game more.

Cook said there were no excuses after seeing his team lose at table-topping Shrewsbury, but would be looking for an improvement when the side travel to the capital. “We go into every game looking to win,” he said. "That has always been our mentality and this game is no different.”

Karl Robinson has turned around the fortunes of The Addicks since taking over at The Valley last November and they are real contenders this season. Only defeat at Plymouth has tarnished an otherwise 100% return and, after beating Southend United 2-1 on Saturday, they will be looking for back-to-back home wins…Cook and Latics will be determined not to let that happen.

Karl Robinson – great impact

OUR RECORD AT THE VALLEY
The sides have only been paired together in the league four times, and Latics are still looking for their first win in SE7, with three defeats and just a solitary point from the 0-0 draw in October 2013 to show for our matches there. How dearly Paul Cook would like to create a bit of history on Tuesday.

On our last trip to the Valley, in August 2015, Callum McManaman cancelled out Jordan Cousins’ early strike but Frank Moussa’s deflected injury-time winner broke Latics hearts.

The last time – Injury time agony

MAJOR CONNECTIONS
Of the current squads, Jason Pearce was of course a Latics player until this time last year, while Nathan Byrne spent the second half of the season at The Valley. Terell Thomas came from Charlton over the summer but had not appeared for the first team after coming through the ranks.

Looking back in time, Connor McAleny, Scott Carson, Marcus Bent, Scott Sinclair, Svetoslav Todorov Matt Jackson, Neil Redfearn, Stuart Balmer and John Pender played for both.

Gavin Massey double as superb Latics bounce back at The Valley

  • Wigan Athletic beat Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One
  • Latics up to 6th in table
  • Gavin Massey with his first two goals for Latics
  • Samy Morsy with first of the season late in second half

CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0
LATICS 3
Massey 43, 69
Morsy 86

Gavin Massey’s first goals for the club, one in each half, and a late strike from Samy Morsy, earned Latics a superb win at The Valley after a totally dominant display against the in-form Addicks.

Paul Cook’s men gave the perfect reaction following Saturday’s first defeat of the season by putting in a brilliant performance which bar a short spell in the first half, saw them lay siege to Charlton’s goal virtually from start to finish.

With 24 clear attempts on goal the only real surprise on the night was that the scoreline wasn’t more emphatic.

Massey scored his first just before the break from close range then underlined Latics’ superiority with an emphatic finish in the second half. Morsy put the cherry on the cake with a late strike.

The Addicks came into the game on the back of four straight wins and with a 100% record at The Valley but from the first whistle, they were second best.

Latics made the one change going into the game, Will Grigg making his first start in the league since February, in place of Ivan Toney.

Latics went in a goal up at the break after dominating the early stages before The Addicks came very close but Massey pounced just before half-time.

He had almost put Latics ahead after just 18 seconds, diving to meet Michael Jacobs’ left-wing cross at the far post but he headed just wide. Nick Powell then glanced Massey’s cross inches wide from the other side with three minutes gone.

Jacobs had two chances in quick succession. First, he teased his way to the edge of the box on eight minutes, was brought down by Tariqe Fosu but fired the free-kick straight at Ben Amos. Two minutes later he created another opening, this time Amos pulled off a great save, diving low to his left to parry the ball.

Charlton came back into the game when Chris Solly put a dangerous ball into the box from the right after 16 minutes, Josh Magennis inches away from connecting. Then Jamie Jones had to be alert to block a stinging effort from Fosu from just inside the box on 23 minutes.

The hosts came really close to on 29 minutes, Jake Forster-Caskey’s rasping effort from the edge of the box beat Jones but rattled back off the crossbar and with Jones scrambling back across goal, Magennis headed just wide.

Latics finished the half strongly, with Massey finally breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute after a great move ended with Jacobs releasing Reece James down the left side and his fizzing cross across the face of goal was converted by Massey from close range.

Latics had two chances within the opening seconds of the second half, Amos firstly pulling off a superb save at full stretch to deny Powell after just 26 seconds played, then having to save an angled drive from Massey with his chest. Powell then put a curling effort from 25 yards a yard wide after 52 minutes.

Jones’ quick clearance after 57 minutes set Jacobs away free and he was inches wide of the far post with his effort, then Powell had a powerful shot saved a minute later. Alex Bruce headed straight at Amos from Lee Evans’ corner on the hour mark.

Massey’s second came on 69 minutes when the winger found himself in a yard of space in the box to meet Nathan Byrne's pass and he absolutely smashed it passed Amos.

Toney replaced Powell after 73 minutes and immediately tested Amos from distance but it was Morsy who had the final word, shooting low past Amos in the 86th minute to make absolutely sure of the points.

Latics: Jones, Byrne, Bruce, Burn, James, Morsy, Evans, Massey, Jacobs (Elder, 90), Powell (Toney, 73), Grigg (Power, 77).
Subs not used: Sarkic, Thomas, Perkins, Roberts.

Charlton Athletic:  Amos, Kashi (Konsa 67), Bauer, Pearce, Clarke (Dodoo, 73), Holmes, Fosu (Ahearne-Grant, 67), Forster-Caskey, Solly, Dasilva, Magennis.
