EARLY TEAM NEWS

Speaking to iFollow Latics at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre on Friday morning, Latics assistant manager Leam Richardson gave the latest update on Nick Powell, who was replaced early in Wednesday night's 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.

"Nick has been in with the physios and been in the gym, whilst he has also had scans.

"We want him on the pitch but we certainly can't put him or the team at risk."

Latics continue to be without longer term injured players Antonee Robinson (ankle), Gavin Massey (hamstring), Michael Jacobs (hamstring) and Chey Dunkley (knee).

For Wanderers, who lost at Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, Josh Magennis is a doubt, their boss Phil Parkinson confirmed earlier today.

A SPECIAL DAY FOR CAL MAC

Callum McManaman could make his 200th career appearance if he features at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday.

Latics’ forward, who is in his second spell with the club, scored the third goal against Blackburn Rovers to ensure victory for Paul Cook’s side, finishing smartly at the back-post after Josh Windass’ cross.

Latics couldn’t quite find a derby day win at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday afternoon, despite creating second-half openings after Will Grigg had cancelled out Will Buckley’s opener for Bolton Wanderers.

On a tense afternoon, Latics looked the more likely to grab a second-half winner but Josh Windass and Callum McManaman couldn’t beat Ben Alnwick, whilst Christian Doidge somehow managed to clear off the line when a Reece James corner looked to be heading into the net directly or via a Lee Evans touch at the back post.

Paul Cook made two changes from Wednesday night’s win over Blackburn Rovers as Windass and Grigg started in place of Nick Powell and James Vaughan.

Latics started the game brightly and had a glorious chance to open the scoring early on as Nathan Byrne freed Windass on the left and he pulled back for Lee Evans who blazed over at the back post.

Despite that early dominance, Bolton went ahead after just seven minutes as Buckley was on hand to drive a deep cross at the back post.

Latics got their leveller on 25 minutes as Reece James picked out a perfect pass for Grigg, who was brought down by Jack Hobbs in the area before picking himself up to score his fourth goal of the season.

Cook’s side started the second-half brightly too as Gary Roberts fired across goal, his shot going just wide albeit a slight touch from anyone queuing up in the six yard box would have seen Latics go in front.

The hour mark approached and Latics continued to look the more likely; first Windass had a great chance when Evans headed back into the area and the former Rangers man turned nicely to give himself a one on one with Alnwick but he fired wide.

The better chances were falling for Latics and a James corner looked to be heading in ten minutes from time, with Evans also waiting to poke home at the back post, but Doidge managed to fire the ball over his own crossbar.

Five minute later, James and Nathan Byrne linked up well on the right and the former’s shot deflected into the path of McManaman, who couldn’t quite get a shot off at close range.

Bolton Wanderers: Alnwick (Capt); Taylor, Beevers, Hobbs, Olkowski; Lowe, Williams; Noone, Buckley (Magennis 67), Ameobi (Wildschut 76); Doidge.
Subs: Matthews, Vela, Oztumer, Wilson, Wheater.
