PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY – TOMMY LEE TESTIMONIAL
CHESTERFIELD V WIGAN ATHLETIC
WEDNESDAY 25 JULY 2018
KICK-OFF 7PM

Latics have returned from La Cala and will step up their pre-season preparations with a trip to Chesterfield on Wednesday night (kick-off 7pm).

Paul Cook will take a side to face his former club as the Spireites celebrate the career of their former goalkeeper Tommy Lee, with a special testimonial to mark his spell with the club after he was forced to retire due to injury.

Lee played over 350 games for the Derbyshire club in a ten-year spell and Cook told the new Wigan Athletic podcast ‘Latics Listen’ what a true great his former stopper has been for Chesterfield FC.

“Tommy is outstanding,” Cook said. “He is a fantastic lad and it is really disappointing to see him have to cut short his career.

“He has been an outstanding goalkeeper and as a lad and a character, you won’t get better. He was such a popular member of the dressing room.

“The fact we can go back and help in any way, shape or form, is great for us all.”

Latics drew 1-1 at Chesterfield on Wednesday evening as pre-season preparations continued for Paul Cook’s side in a fitting testimonial for his former goalkeeper at the Proact Stadium, Tommy Lee.

A Will Grigg header gave Latics the lead but Jerome Binnom-Williams fired home from close range in the second-half to level for the Spireites.

Cook used 20 members of his pre-season squad, including trialists Darron Gibson, James Perch and Ross Wallace, as his side continued to build their fitness ahead of their Sky Bet Championship opener with Sheffield Wednesday a week on Saturday.

Next, Cook’s side will turn their attentions towards Sunday’s mouth-watering final friendly against Rangers at Ibrox, with over 1,600 Latics fans heading north of the border.

In Derbyshire, the hosts, buoyed by the occasion, started better and Binnon-Williams went close from Robbie Weir’s cross.

Nick Powell and Reece James both fired free-kicks off target before Grigg got Latics ahead with a glancing header from Max Power’s cross, which deflected off a Spireites defender and went in.

Latics started brightly in the second-half; Powell pressed well and forced a chance for himself before chipping just over Shwan Jalal in the hosts’ goal.

Chey Dunkley was then on hand to protect the lead with a good block from Charlie Carter.

Grigg and Gavin Massey were denied by blocks from Michael Nelson in quick succession before Binnom-Williams got the leveller as Latics failed to clear from a free-kick and he finished at close range.

Latics did create a late chance for a winner as substitutes Gary Roberts and Leo Da Silva Lopes linked up only to see the latter see his effort deflected wide for corner.

Chesterfield: Lee (Jalal 6 (Anyon 85)), Barry, Binnom-Williams (Smith 70), Evans, Maguire, Carter (Rowley 78), Weston (Sinnott 80), Ugwu, Hines (Trialist 71), Nelson (Shaw 58), Weir (Wedgbury 71).

Latics: Walton; James (Gibson 45), Dunkley (Bruce 72), Burn, Perch* (Naismith 56); Morsy (Capt) (MacDonald 72), Power (Da Silva Lopes 79); Massey (Wallace 77), Powell (Roberts 66), Jacobs (McManaman 61); Grigg (Vaughan 61).
