Preston North End v Wigan Athletic Head to Head

EARLY TEAM NEWS

Speaking to iFollow Latics on Friday morning at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre, Paul Cook said he's got his first real selection headache of the season, with only one player in the treatment room ahead of his side's visit to local rivals Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.

"We're fully fit for the weekend apart from Gavin (Massey) with his rehab. I suppose you could say it's my first real selection headache because we have everyone available.

"Samy (Morsy) comes back into the squad after his rest in the week and we have Dan Burn available for the first time since pre-season.

"Griggy is fully fit now as well. He went away with Northern Ireland carrying a slight injury, so when he came back he needed time to recover. In that time we lost James Vaughan to injury as well, but it was positive in the fact that it allowed Joe Garner to catch up with game time having missed pre-season."

Should captain Morsy come back into the side, the Egyptian international will make his 300th career appearance.

PRESTON NORTH END

As reported on pnefc.net, Darnell Fisher will be assessed ahead of Saturday's game after he was replaced due to a knock in Tuesday's 3-3 draw with Aston Villa, whilst Brandon Barker, who missed the game due to illness, is expected to return.

Josh Harrop and Billy Bodin are both long term absentees with ACL injuries, whilst Callum Woods and Sean Maguire are nearing returns, with the latter back in training this week. Both are expected to make returns after the international break.

WIGAN ATHLETIC 0

Attendance: 15,280 (3,831 away)

Latics suffered a disappointing derby day defeat at Preston North End on Saturday as goals from Tom Barkhuizen and Callum Robinson (2) in each half, as well as a late Paul Gallagher penalty, gave Alex Neil’s side a 4-0 victory.

Darron Gibson was sent off in the second-half for Paul Cook’s side, who suffered their heaviest defeat under his stewardship on a rare off day.

Cook made changes from the side which drew with Swansea City in midweek as Samy Morsy and Will Grigg returned in place of Lee Evans and Joe Garner, who were both on the bench.

The derby afternoon didn’t start well for Cook’s side, with the hosts taking the lead on 16 minutes as Barkhuizen finished from the right of the penalty area after being played in by Alan Browne.

Albeit not clear-cut, Latics had chances to respond, with the first coming almost immediately as a deep Michael Jacobs cross hit Nick Powell and almost went in, though Tom Clarke was on hand to block on the line for the hosts.

Powell and Josh Windass had further efforts as the half progressed, though Latics were fortunate to go in just one down as Callum Robinson fired narrowly wide for the hosts in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.

And, just after the restart, the hosts went close again as Browne fired against the crossbar at the start of a frantic couple of minutes which did eventually see Preston double their lead. First, though, Reece James broke well from his own half and fired a stinging shot towards goal which was well-saved by Chris Maxwell. From that, Preston broke, though and Daniel Johnson cut back for Robinson at the back to score for Neil’s side and doubled their advantage.

It got worse for Latics give minutes later as Gibson was handed a red card for a late foul on Ben Pearson.

James again forced Maxwell into another save in another solid performance from the Chelsea loanee, but the game was well and truly away from Cook’s side when substitute Dan Burn was penalised for a foul on Lukas Nmecha in the area, with Gallagher stepping up to fire home the resulting penalty.

Again, James went close to a reply with a 25-yard free-kick, but the misery was compounded in the sixth minute of injury time for Latics, with Chris Maguire cutting back for Robinson to score his second.

The result drops Latics to 10th in the Sky Bet Championship, a point off the play-off places and eight points ahead of Preston, who climb to 22nd.

Preston North End: Maxwell; Fisher, Clarke (Capt), Storey, Hughes; Pearson, Johnson (Gallagher 74); Robinson, Browne, Barkhuizen (Maguire 74); Nmecha (Davies 88)
Subs: Rudd, Earl, Moult, Barker.

Wigan Athletic: Walton; James, Kipre, Dunkley, Robinson; Morsy (Capt), Gibson; Windass (McManaman 68), Powell (Burn 45), Jacobs (Garner 68); Grigg.
Subs: Jones, Byrne, Roberts, Evans.
