A late Mario Vrancic penalty was the difference as Latics lost 1-0 at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon.

Latics battled away on a tense afternoon in Norfolk and looked to have earned a point but a late foul from Callum Connolly on Teemu Pukki in the penalty area presented Vrancic with the chance to score from the spot and earn Norwich a 1-0 win.

Paul Cook named an unchanged side from last Friday’s 1-0 win over Bristol City, though Will Grigg and Callum McManaman were back among the substitutes after injury.

Latics started brightly and saw a glorious early chance go off target as Cedric Kipre headed wide from a Lee Evans corner.

After that start, though, the home side gained the control their recent form suggested they might and Latics were thankful to Christian Walton for denying Marco Stiepermann before Chey Dunkley recovered from a short back pass to deny Pukki, albeit the home fans felt their side should have had a penalty.

Josh Windass saw an effort blocked from the edge of the area as the first-half ended even with neither side exerting long periods of dominance on the other.

The visitors took the initiative early in the second-half and, again, Walton was on hand to deny Stiepermann before Alex Tettey fired off target – those efforts coming either side of Windass blazing over from 25 yards.

Captain Samy Morsy was the next to make a vital interception for his side as he burst back into the penalty area to deny Stiepermann who found a way through on goal.

Reece James, Walton and Dunkley all made further efforts that looked to have saved Latics a point but substitute Connolly fouled Pukki in the closing stages and Vracic converted from the spot.

Norwich City: Krul; Zimmermann, Leitner, Lewis, Klose, Buendia (Rhodes 75), Stiepermann, Pukki, Tettey (Capt), Cantwell (Vrancic 64), Aarons (Thompson 64).
Subs: McGovern, Godfrey, Trybull, Srbeny.

Latics: Walton; James, Dunkley, Kipre, Robinson; Morsy (Capt) (Grigg 87), Evans (Connolly 75); Jacobs, Powell, Windass; Garner (Gibson 67).
Subs: Jones, Byrne, McManaman, Naismith.
