Goals from Olly Crankshaw (2), Tylor Golden and Joe Piggott earned Latics an impressive 4-0 away win over Rotherham United at Roundwood on Tuesday afternoon.

Latics, who went into the game full of confidence following their 4-1 win over Notts County at Christopher Park last time out, opened the scoring courtesy of Crankshaw’s strike, before Golden doubled Nick Chadwick’s side’s lead with ten minutes to go before half-time.

Second half goals from Crankshaw and Piggott secured the three points for Latics, who completed a perfect away day against the Central League leaders to cut the gap to just two points.

Latics, who started in a 4-2-3-1 formation, made seven changes following on from their victory over Notts County, with Golden, Sam Finley and Ryan Galvin replacing Victor Maffeo, Luke Robinson and Adam Long in defence, whilst goalkeeper Jordan Perrin replaced Owen Evans and Shaun MacDonald, Luke Burgess and Crankshaw came into the midfield for Scott Smith, Divin Baningime and Charlie Jolley.

Despite an early chance for the Millers to take the lead, Latics took the initiative in the game, and opened the scoring on 19 minutes. Captain, Chris Merrie did well to regain the ball in the midfield and release Burgess, who drove forward and found Crankshaw, who routinely chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper, Laurence Bilboe to give Latics an early lead.

The visitors came close to doubling their advantage soon after when Burgess was involved again, this time crashing a shot against the post, but Latics eventually found their clinical edge ten minutes before the interval.

Left-back Galvin drove forward down the left and his initial cross was blocked, though the defender’s second ball was inch-perfect, picking out Piggott who knocked the ball into the path of Golden, with the right-back making no mistake, firing Latics into a 2-0 lead at Roundwood.

After a cagey opening to the second half with chances few and far between, Latics got their third goal of the game on 55 minutes. Denzel Williams picked out substitute, Thelo Aasgaard who played in Piggott down the right-hand side and the forward’s inviting cross was met by Crankshaw first-time, who finished off a devastating counter attack.

Latics inflicted further damage on Ciaran Toner’s younger Rotherham side with less than 30 minutes remaining in the second-half.

MacDonald’s switch of play found Galvin, with the latter being a threat all afternoon, and his pass found Crankshaw, who eventually picked out Piggott, with the striker turning and lashing in Latics’ fourth and his fourth goal in three Central League games.

Latics came close to adding their fifth with other chances in the second half through substitutes Aasgaard and Neil Monaghan, with the latter having a late header well saved by Bilboe following smart play in the final third.

Despite late pressure from the hosts, Latics held on to record their second clean sheet in four games and inflict defeat on league leaders, Rotherham United in the Central League.

Latics: Perrin, Golden, Williams, Finley, Galvin, MacDonald, Merrie (capt), Perry, Burgess, Crankshaw, Piggott
Subs: Tickle, Roberts, Monoghan, Aasgaard, O’Neil.
