Latics fell to their first defeat in four Central League games as three goals in 11 minutes saw visitors, Doncaster Rovers, come away with the points on Tuesday afternoon.

Goals from Charlie Jolley and Kyle Joseph gave the hosts hope, but the visitors held on and Latics were left frustrated by a resilient performance from Rovers.

Nick Chadwick made two changes to his side from their 6-0 victory over Mansfield Town last week, with Adam Long replaced by a trialist Reece Ford and Charlie Jolley taking the place of Joe Gelhardt up top.

Latics, who set-up in a 4-4-2 formation, included stars from Latics' unbeaten Under 18s, Charlie Jolley and Divin Baningime, and started the game on the front-foot.

Olly Crankshaw, who has two goals on his last two games, delivered a dangerous corner from the right, though forward, Joe Piggott, failed to get a clean connection on his header as he rose highest.

The visitors had their first chance of the game minutes later, Watters evaded three Latics players and got his shot away, though the effort failed to trouble goalkeeper Owen Evans.

Evans was on-hand to deny Watters again just after the 20th minute mark, as the visitors formed a counter-attack, though the curling shot forced the goalkeeper into a good save.

Latics came their closest on the 34th minute as the ball dropped invitingly to Crankshaw on the edge of the box, though his left-footed curling effort was well tipped over by the Doncaster goalkeeper.

The home side should have took the lead just before the interval, Crankshaw’s deep ball was met by left-back, Ryan Galvin, at the back post and his pull-back found Jolley, but the forward could not convert his diving header goal wards from six yards out.

Despite pressure from Latics, the visitors took the lead just before the hour mark through Rowe's first of the game, though, an instant reply came from Latics as Jolley equalised.

The forward found his way in-behind the defence and his shot beat the goalkeeper.

Two goals in seven minutes for the visitors put them back in control, Rowe doubling his tally before Gibbons added Doncaster's third.

U18 striker Joseph came on as a substitute and halved the deficit in the 89th minute.

Joseph anticipated onto the loose ball to fire home his third goal for the Development Squad this season, scoring his 24th goal of the season across both of Latics' senior academy teams.

Despite late pressure from Latics, Rovers held on at Christopher Park to condemn Latics to their first Central League defeat in four games.
