Wigan Athletic’s under-18s registered their first win of the season in style on Tuesday afternoon as they beat local rivals Bolton Wanderers 5-2 at Christopher Park in the First Round of the Lancashire FA Youth Cup.
Mwiya Malumo bagged a hat-trick and Neil Monaghan and Charlie Jolley also notched in a ruthless display from Nick Chadwick’s side.
Latics were ahead inside the first minute as Joe Downey, Jolley and Mitchell Culshaw linked up on the right for the latter to put the ball in behind for Malumo to finish first time.
Three minutes were on the clock when Malumo bagged his second, reacting first in the box to Culshaw’s effort after Will McGuffie had intercepted to start a quick attack.
After Bolton pulled a goal back for 2-1, Malumo got his hat-trick on 35 minutes as he finished when one-on-one with the Bolton keeper, Jolley again involved in the build-up.
After Malumo missed a penalty and a chance for his and Latics’ fourth, Chadwick’s side did get a fourth through Jolley, who flicked the ball home from Tylor Golden’s cross.
Bolton made it 4-2 on the 61st minute but Latics completed the demolition on 85 minutes when Neil Monaghan turned and finished first time from just outside the box.
