Latics are top of the tree for Christmas thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory at home to Shrewsbury Town this weekend, a win which extended their EFL Youth Alliance winning streak to an incredible 10 matches.
Charlie Jolley’s 40th minute goal proved the difference in Shropshire during another battling and commendable performance from Nick Chadwick’s young charges.
Latics were made to work for their win after an early scare saw a goal ruled out for the hosts for a foul on Anthony Plant, before Jordan Perrin was forced into a smart save to deny Tyrone Ofori from the edge of the area.
After a slow start, Latics got going and shortly before half time they had the lead, Jolley latching onto the end of a Mitchell Culshaw cross to head in the only goal of the game.
Shrewsbury were denied for the second time in the second half when the referee chalked off another goal for a foul, but a solid defensive display was enough for Latics to hold onto the three points.
Latics: Perrin, Plant, Golden, Obi, McGuffie, Cotter (Hilton 90+5), Downey, Culshaw (Berry 82), Baningime (Roberts 86), Maffeo, Jolley (Malumo 70)
