Latics’ under-18s suffered a first defeat of their EFL Youth Alliance campaign on Saturday as they lost 3-0 to local rivals Preston North End.
On a rare off day, Nick Chadwick’s side failed to create clear-cut chances on the back of putting four past Walsall last time out.
They went behind on 25 minutes after a scramble in the box, albeit Mwiya Malumo looked to have been fouled in the build-up. Tom Stead getting the goal for the visitors.
More controversy on the hour mark when the game stopped as Jordan Perrin looked to have been fouled but Preston continued and Darren Brannigan fired the ball into the empty net for 2-0 with no foul given by the referee.
Five minutes from time, with bodies committed forwards, Harry Garstang made it 3-0 when Bradley Roberts and Adam Long couldn’t clear.
Latics: Perrin, Plant, Golden (B. Roberts 85), Obi (Long 46), Hilton (Capt), Downey, Culshaw (Maffeo 68), McGuffie (Cotter 46), Malumo, Jolley, Banigime (Monaghan 88).
