Wigan Athletic’s under-18s suffered their first defeat of pre-season on Saturday afternoon as they went down 2-0 at Crewe Alexandra, despite a generally positive performance.
Latics were on top after the goal and good link-up between Mitchell Culshaw and Kyle Joseph almost created an opening before Charlie Jolley hit the bar.
Divin Baningime thought he may well have won his side a second-half penalty before Latics’ best chance for a leveller came from a Joe McWilliam cross as MacKenzine O’Neill flicked the ball into the path of Baningime, who hit the bar from close range.
Latics deserved more from the game in terms of a result but they put in a good performance and will take that forwards.
Latics: Jones, Maffeo (Broe 45), Roberts (Trialist 45), Trialist (Isherwood 45), Long (Brooks 45), H. Jolley (Monaghan 45), Culshaw (O’Neill 45), Smith (McWilliam 63), Joseph (Baningime 45), C. Jolley (Joseph (SECOND SPELL) 71), Asgaard (Robinson 45)
