Latics began their pre-season preparations with a victory on Tuesday afternoon with Victor Maffeo, Charlie Jolley and Thelo Asgaard scoring in an impressive 3-0 win against Category 1 West Bromwich Albion at Palm training ground.

Nick Chadwick’s side, who will be aiming to build on their solid foundations from last campaign, impressed in the early season encounter. Looking dangerous on the break, they announced themselves early on when James Berry’s shot flashed wide.

Berry was involved again soon after as he found space on the right to pull the ball back for team-mate Jolley, only for the forward’s penalty appeal to be waved away by the referee.
Latics made the breakthrough just seven minutes later, midfielder Mckenzie O’Neil was adjudged to have been brought down by his man unfairly, following Berry’s low ball into the box. Up stepped Maffeo to dispatch the penalty comfortably past the Baggies keeper.

Despite the hosts threatening towards the end of the half, Latics doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. Neil Monaghan intelligently linked up with Jolley and the forward’s persistence paid off as his attempted pull-back deflected off an opposition player into the net.

Latics continued to impress in the second half, forward Kyle Joseph came close twice in quick succession but was denied by the opposition goalkeeper.

The game was effectively wrapped up mid-way through the second-half, when second-half captain Scott Smith’s lofted ball found Mitchell Culshaw and his low cross was turned into the net by a delighted Thelo Asgaard.

Latics (1st half) XI: Jones, Maffeo, Isherwood, Long, Trialist, Weir, Monaghan, O’Neil, Berry, Baningime, C. Jolley.

Latics (2nd half) XI: McGaughey, Broe, H. Jolley, Brooks, Robinson, Smith, McWilliam, Culshaw, Gelhardt, Asgaard, Joseph.
