Latics lose out on penalties in Lancashire Senior Cup First Round after Noel Hunt double recovered two-goal deficit in normal time
- Lancashire Senior Cup Report: Blackburn Rovers 2 - 2 Wigan Athletic (Rovers win 5-4 on pens).
- Latics trailed 2-0 but Noel Hunt double sent tie to penalties.
- Penalty misses from Will Grigg and Ryan Colclough see Latics exit Cup in the First Round.
Latics exited the Lancashire Senior Cup at the First Round stage on Monday night as they fell 4-3 on penalties to Blackburn Rovers at the Lancashire FA County Ground in Leyland.
Will Grigg and Ryan Colclough were unsuccessful from the spot after Noel Hunt's late double had sent the tie to penalties following Blackburn's goals either side of half-time from Joe Rankin-Costello.
Alex Bruce and Gary Roberts made their first appearances since their Deadline Day arrivals and it was the latter who went closest early on. Max Power sent Will Grigg free on the right side, he pulled the ball back for Gary Roberts, who jinxed past his defender 22 yards out, but was pulled down. He took the free-kick himself which deflected off the wall and inches over.
Latics’ only other significant chance before the break came when David Perkins released Power, he found Ryan Colclough 30 yards out on the right side, who drove into the box and shot a yard wide with angled drive across the face of goal.
Rovers’ goalscorer Rankin-Costello had already fluffed his lines early on when a loose clearance by Jordan Perrin left the goalmouth gaping but he put the ball just wide. His goal later in the half came after a goalmouth scramble saw the ball strike Perrin’s far post, and with the Latics keeper stranded, before the ball was poked in at the far post.
Colclough and Roberts both went close early in the second-half before Rankin-Costello made it 2-0 on 57 minutes when he headed in from Lewis Travis' cross.
Grigg went through but missed and then Power twice fired over from range as Latics looked for a path back into the game.
Hunt got his first to start the come back 16 minutes from time as he converted Terell Thomas' cross.
The Irish forward's leveller came after Grigg had again gone close; this time the striker firing a neat finish beyond Rovers keeper Charlie Albinson.
That goal sent the tie to penalties where Power got Latics off to a good start before Perrin saved from Rankin-Costello to give Latics control of the shootout.
However, misses from Grigg and Colclough saw Rovers regain control and they scored their remaining spot-kicks - with Hunt also converting his for Latics - to progress to the next round.
