Latics were in fine form on Wednesday afternoon when they struck nine past visitors York City in the Development Squad's latest pre-season friendly, with Luke Burgess and Joe Piggott both grabbing hat-tricks against a young York outfit.
The confident victory made it five games unbeaten in pre-season for the newly reformed U23 side, with Divin Baningime, Charlie Jolley and Tuesday's first team debutant Joe Gelhardt all adding to the two hat-tricks.
Burgess, who is currently out on loan at Barrow AFC in the National League, returned to Christopher Park for the midweek clash and soon had Latics in front. The midfielder linked up with Baningime, who travelled with the first team to Rotherham on Tuesday, before rounding the York keeper for 1-0.
Baningime himself doubled Latics' lead when he was tripped in the area and dusted himself down to take the resulting spot kick for 2-0.
A third soon followed and a second of the game for Burgess. The 19-year-old saw his inital shot saved, but it fell back to Ryan Galvin who squared his pass for Burgess to tap in.
It wasn't long before Piggott got in on the act to make it 4-0. Having scored three goals in his last two matches against Colwyn Bay and Rangers FC, the striker made it look easy when creative spark Baningime found him in the area for a close range finish.
Piggott drove home Latics' fifth and his second after greak work between captain Chris Merrie and left back Galvin, the latter beating his man to find the striker for 5-0, before Burgess completed his hat-trick for 6-0 just before half time.
It didn't get any easier for the visitors in the second half and not to be out shone, Piggott soon put his argument in for the match ball by completing his treble from a Charlie Jolley cut back for 7-0.
Piggott then turned provider for 8-0 when his fierce drive was parried by the York goalkeeper straight into the path of Jolley for the finish.
Gelhardt, the 16-year-old forward who made his first team debut in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, made it cloud nine for Latics with the final kick of the game. Piggott and Jolley combined once again, with the latter slipping a pass through to an unmarked Gelhardt for a left footed finish to round off the match.
Blackburn Rovers, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Welsh side Bala Town await Latics ahead of their season opener against Notts County on Tuesday 11 September.
