Scottish new boy aiming to contend with competitive midfield as season opener draws near

Fraser Fyvie may have only been at Wigan Athletic for just under a month but, he is showing the desire to become and influential player in the coming season.

With the first Barclays Premier League match only 10 days away when Latics face Chelsea, Fyvie said that he was ready and excited for the start of the season but knows he is going to have to battle to earn a place in the team.

“I’m just trying to get my name in with the manager now because I want to be on that team sheet.

“Obviously the other midfielders in the squad have been playing in the Premier League for a few years now and have adapted to the style of football that the manager wants to play.

“They’re all top players and some of them are even international players so I need to get myself up to their level to claim a first team place for myself.”

As pre-season comes to a close with the final game of the schedule on Sunday against Celta Vigo, Fyvie also spoke about how he has enjoyed the work during the summer.

“I’m really enjoying it now I’ve had time to get to know everyone and all of the lads have been great to me.

“It has been a good experience so far because we’ve been to another country to train which is always exciting and played against opposition from all over Europe which is a good test.”
