Wigan Athletic Community Trust is supporting a new scheme that aims to improve the health of men in the local area.

The Wigan Fit Fans project is funded by the Premier League/PFA Community Fund and will see the Latics in the Community programme work with partners including NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan to produce football and sports programmes for men over the age of 25.

As well as getting the chance to play sport every week participants on the programme will be given help and advice on issues such as weight management, healthy eating, how to make physical activity part of your everyday life and how to give up smoking.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is right behind the Wigan Fit Fans project: “The Football Club takes is responsibility to the local community very seriously and this new project is another example of this.

“It’s important for everyone to take their health seriously and hopefully the Football Club can inspire more men in Wigan to do so. I’m sure that all the men who take part in the Fit Fans scheme will find it beneficial.”

The Premier League Charitable Fund has awarded Wigan Athletic Community Trust a grant of £120,000 to deliver the scheme over the next three years.

Simon Morgan, Head of Community Development for the Premier League, said: “The strength of the PL/PFA Community Fund has been the capacity it has given Premier League clubs to work with local partners to meet local social needs. Fit Fans is a perfect example of that, and the programme will certainly have a positive impact on men’s health in the Wigan area.”

Ian Riding, Health Improvement Officer for NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan said “The ‘Fit Fans’ programme that is being delivered through stadia and sporting clubs by Wigan Athletic Community Trust provides an ideal opportunity to reach people that may not access health services in the traditional way, allowing us to work together to improve health and wellbeing of our whole community”

The 12-week project will start at the Montrose Skills Hub in Pemberton in September with sessions running on Tuesday evenings between 6pm-8pm.
