Football sessions two nights per week in Shakerley

Coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust are back delivering free football sessions in Shakerley two nights a week as part of a new Midnight League programme.

Funded by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and supported by the Football League Trust the Midnight League scheme will see Latics coaches work with 8 – 19 years on a Thursday and Friday evening for next 12 months.

And as well as providing the chance to play football young people will also be given the chance to gain new qualification and skill as part of the project.

Sessions take place on the Shakerley common and run:

6pm – 7.30pm (8 – 13 year olds)
7.30pm – 8.30pm (13 – 19 year olds)

6pm – 7.30pm (8-13 year olds)
7.30pm – 8.30pm (13-19 year olds)

The Community Trust previously delivered football in Shakerley as part of its Kickz programme but was forced to end these sessions before Christmas due to funding restrictions.

Latics Head of Community Tom Flower said: “We are very grateful to the support of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the Football League Trust to enable us to start these new sessions in Shakerley.

“The young people in the area were upset when we were forced to end the Kickz project in Shakerley at the end of the last year, but as a Community Trust we were determined to try and get the provision back up and running.

“We’re delighted to be working with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and look forward to working with 100’s of local young people for at least the next 12 months.”
