Martinez hopes Figueroa's Olympic dream continues
Wigan Athletic’s own Maynor Figueroa looks to take another step towards Olympic glory this afternoon when Honduras take on Japan in the final Group D match for a place in the quarter finals.
Having already defeated favourites Spain and drawn with Morocco, a result against the group leaders will ensure a place in the knockout stages against the winners or runners-up from Group C.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez praised the efforts of Figueroa who is doing is club proud in the Capital:
“When we made the decision to allow him to go and compete in the Games we saw it as an opportunity for him to grow and improve from a phenomenal experience he could enjoy,” said Martinez.”
“It looked a tough ask for Honduras when you consider the teams they were up against in the group stage, but their performances against Morocco and Spain have been excellent and it’s been great to see our own Maynor showing leadership on the pitch.
“Our relationship with the Honduras national team is very strong so we know where he is physically at the moment and can be assured that he’ll be fit and ready for the start of the new season.
“It’s the experience of a lifetime for him personally and he has all the best wishes from everyone at the Club – he couldn’t have asked for a better way to prepare mentally for the new season.”
