Pre-season friendly ends in defeat
WIGAN ATHLETIC . . . . . . . . 0
REAL MALLORCA . . . . . . . . . 2
Victor Casadesus 47
Kevin Garcia 84
It was a game filled with possessional dominance by Latics but they were caught out of nowhere on two occasions and Victor Casadesus and Kevin Garcia provided the cutting edge to give the Spanish Islanders the victory.
Both goals came against the run of play as Latics looked to feel their way into a guilt edge chance but Mallorca 'keeper Dudu Aouate was equal to every chance.
New boy Ivan Ramis (pictured) started the game for Latics and was given a warm welcome by the fans occupying the west stand and was substituted at half time so that the fans could show their appreciation.
Latics started the stronger as the midfield and defence maintained control of possession.
They even had the ball in the net after five minutes but as Franco Di Santo dispatched the ball in at the back post, the corner that it came from was judged to have swung out of play and then back in.
After nine minutes the first real glimpse of quality came as Di Santo received the ball to feet on the edge of the area, before swivelling around the defender and striking his shot just over the bar.
Victor Moses then got in on the act after confusion in the Mallorca box from Latics' constant switching of the ball from wing to wing left him open on the penalty spot but, his left footed shot was tipped over the bar by Aouate.
The first half fizzled out without much concern for either side, other than a break by Moses and Di Santo which resulted in the latter having another low drive turned around the posts by Aouate.
Mallorca came firing out of the blocks in the second half and found themselves in the lead just two minutes after the break.
Casadesus ghosted through the midfield off the ball and capitalised on a sloppy pass to find himself completely unopposed and through on goal.
The striker lashed it from the edge of the area and it rose beyond Ali Al Habsi into the top corner.
It was a similar story in the second half as it was in the first, with Latics controlling possession but being snuffed out at every attack.
The best chance of the half for Latics fell to Shaun Maloney who stung the keeper's fingers when he and Jean Beausejour worked a short corner and the Scotsman curled one towards goal from a tight angle.
As Latics looked to settle, Mallorca hit them again and as the game came to a close, Kevin Garcia doubled the visitor's lead.
It was a lapse in defence that saw Sergi Enric and the goal scorer run in behind the defence and Enric squared the ball for Garcia to smash into the net.
The game provided a good chance for many players to complete 90 minutes and Fraser Fyvie also stepped out at the DW for the first time with five minutes remaining to a good reception.
