Young people from Wigan Athletic's Kickz project are taking on their local police force this Thursday night in a special 11-a-side football match
The game will take place at Atherton LR Football Ground and will see officers from the Atherton Neighbourhood Policing Team play a friendly against a group of young people involved in the Kickz scheme which operates in Hag Fold. The match will kick off at 7pm and entry is free.
Every week over 100 young people take part in football and sports activities with Latics in the Community as part of the Kickz scheme with officers regularly attending sessions in order to get to know the young people.
Kickz Co-ordinator Adam Jones said: “One of the great things about Kickz is that young people and police officers get to interact with one another in a neutral environment.
“This match will build on this and will also allow us to promote the good work we are doing with Kickz to the wider community.”
The Kickz project, which is supported by the Premier League, has been operating in Hag Fold since 2007.
It aims to give young people between the ages of 12 and 19 something constructive to do in the evenings and allows them to take part in volunteering and gain sports qualifications.
Activities run at the Dorset Road Community Field on Hag Fold Estate three nights a week for 48 weeks of the year:
Monday: 6pm – 8pm
Thursday: 6pm – 8pm
Friday: 6pm – 8pm
Kickz is also supported by Wigan Council, Wigan and Leigh Housing and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.
