Gaffer to examine footage of Figueroa red card before deciding upon appeal
Roberto Martinez revealed he is considering appealing the red card shown to Maynor Figueroa at St. James’ Park against Newcastle United on Monday night.
The Honduran was sent off after a challenge on Papiss Cisse inside the area after twelve minutes which led to referee Mike Jones awarding a penalty and brandishing the red card.
Latics have until 5.00pm on Tuesday to lodge an appeal to the FA and have the card rescinded in time for Saturday’s home match with QPR.
After the game the Gaffer gave his view, saying:
“It’s a big decision in the game and within the space of ten minutes we found ourselves 2-0 down in a difficult situation.
“Maynor is one of the most honest players I’ve ever managed and he was in bits at half-time after his red card. I think it was a very harsh punishment and we’ll examine the footage before making a decision on the appeal.”
It was an incident Latics couldn’t recover from in terms of the score-line, eventually slipping to a 3-0 defeat, but Martinez was proud at the manner in which is players attempted a response, saying:
“Despite the setback we applied ourselves really well and played with real composure, and perhaps with a little more sharpness inside the final three we could have taken something from the game.
“After the break we needed to score early and in fairness we started the brighter of the two sides but it proved to be too big a task for us to overcome.
“We didn’t want to feel sorry for ourselves and in that second-half ended up with better possession than the home side with a man less.
“I feel we showed a real outstanding performance against adversity and we’ll use that in our next game.
”I thought the fans were outstanding; despite the score-line they remained supportive of the team and completely fulfilled their role during the game.
“We’re disappointed they couldn’t be rewarded on the night because they really did their club proud, but we’ll aim to put that right at the weekend.”
