Dave Whelan got the perfect gift on his 76th birthday, a big three points against Reading.

The team made the Chairman sweat in an exhilarating game but, by that all important final whistle it was mission accomplished and a day to savour as Latics ran out 3-2 winners.

Whelan enjoyed the dramatic football and shared a joke or two with his manager and players.

“We haven’t won like that in a while and for Jordi Gomez to get a hat trick like that is something special.

“I went into the dressing room and Jordi said to me ‘I did it for you Chairman on your birthday’.

“Roberto also said, especially for my birthday he wanted to make it an end-to-end thriller.”

The Chairman praised Latics’ second half display and was delighted by the character of the team.

“As the game went on we had some fantastic chances and could have been two or three up at half time, so it was a shock to be 1-0 down.

“In the second half it was magnificent end-to-end football from both teams and to win like that in the last minute was the icing on the cake.

“The players gave their all in the game and showed that fighting character that the Club has, it was a great three points to collect.”
