James McArthur holds the quality of Latics’ hat-trick hero in high regard.

Jordi Gomez’s impact on Saturday’s game as he scored all three in Latics’ 3-2 victory over Reading has been hailed as ‘top quality’ by team-mate James McArthur.

The Spaniard’s Scottish team-mate spoke exclusively to Nick Taylor about Gomez’s influential display against Reading.

“The three goals he scored were magnificent and he won us the three points.

“Hopefully now nobody will be on Jordi’s back, because when you see the winning goal he scores, he shows incredible passion to win the ball on the halfway line in a 50-50 tackle and then runs half the length of the pitch to score from Arouna's pass.

“You could see what scoring the goals meant to him because there was real passion in every celebration.”

McArthur explained that Gomez’s quality is nothing new and certainly nothing different to what he sees in training every day.

“We all see the quality that Jordi possesses on the training pitch and we saw that quite clearly against Reading.

“Jordi is a great player for the team and the Club and he gives his all to make sure we turn out positive results.

“He’s been working really hard in training and has taken his chance in the side with both hands.

“For a player who hasn't played game-after-game he has shown incredible physical performances and he has matched what is demanded by the team.

“He was one of the top runners in our team on Saturday as well and he covered a huge distance on the pitch.”
