James McCarthy hails Ben Watson’s impact on the team after James McArthur missed yesterday’s clash with Tottenham.

“It was a brilliant win because White Hart Lane is a difficult place to go and play at and we really deserved the three points,” said McCarthy.

“Ben was brilliant today stepping in for James (McArthur), he was spreading the ball around really well and keeping the tempo of the game at the level which we wanted.

“Obviously he came up with the winning goal which was great for him and he really deserved it.

“I’m delighted that Ben stepped into the team and did so well and he’s a confident player which was there for everyone to see.”

Watson’s 56th minute strike proved to be the winning goal but, McCarthy believes Latics could have won by an even bigger margin.

“With the chances we had we could have had more goals but, in the end it was only 1-0 which is what really matters.

“We stopped Tottenham from playing and we got on the ball ourselves and played the ball around really well.

“We were different class from the first minute to the last in the way that we worked as a unit.”
