Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been shortlisted in two categories in the 2012 North West Football Awards.

The Latics in Community team has been nominated for its Train with Latics scheme in the Community Initiative of the Year section while the Club is one of four Premier League Clubs in the running for Community Club of the Year.

Based at the Montrose Skills Hub, the Train with Latics programme helped 25 unemployed young people gain new qualifications and skills with many of them re-entering employment or training.

The nomination for the Community Club of the Year recognises the work the Community Trust has done over the last 12 months as well as the Club’s involvement with the Wigan Youth Zone which is due to open in spring 2013.

This has seen the players donate one million pounds to the project and the Premier League Community Facilities Fund award £350,000 to the Community Trust to build four football pitches at the site.

Wigan Athletic Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson, who is also a trustee of the Community Trust said:“Wigan Athletic are in a unique position to engage with local people of all ages to create partnerships and work with groups such as schools, sports organisations, youth groups, families, and disabled people to enhance lives across areas such as community cohesion, health, education and sports participation.

"I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for these awards and it is a reflection of how important this work is for both the Club and Latics in the Community. The work we do in Wigan is increasing all the time but it is equally important that the relationships created and stories they produce provide lasting benefit for everyone involved and clearly we are achieving just that which is the real reward to everyone involved.”

The winners of the awards will be announced at the 2012 North West Football Awards at Old Trafford Cricket ground on Monday November 12th 2012.
