Park Life - Nick Taylor catches up with David Jones to talk mental preparation and how he's feeling a year on from his debut
Just over a year ago midfielder David Jones made his first Premier League appearance against Everton, the very team that Latics face this weekend.
The result from that game was a part of a sticky patch for the team but, this season Jones expressed that the team are more prepared and have matured in able to turn good performances into results.
“Last season games got away from us and we went on a bad run which now we need to address early.
“We’re not preparing any differently but, mentally we are more able to notice the signs in games.
“As you get more experience you notice major times in games when you need to be either solid, or keep the ball rather than pushing for another goal.
“If we get into a good position on Saturday I’m sure that we will be calm, rather than like last year when there were a few games that we should have won but got a little bit anxious.”
The 28-year-old reminisced about his appearance against Everton last season and believes they will be a stern test.
“It was my first appearance in the Premier League for Wigan Athletic and it was a good introduction.
“We were 2-1 down and then I hit the cross bar which I could have done with going in.
“It will be another tough game because they’re playing really well this season so, we’ll be expecting ourselves to be on top form to get the results.
“They've been excellent so far and picked up some really good results and they’ll be full of confidence.
“We need to get results now and we've been preparing really hard this week and we’ll be going into the game to get a really good result.”
Jones struggled with injuries during the final third of last season but, now he is feeling better than ever.
“I feel much better than before my spell of injuries, I've been working hard in the gym and I've become much stronger and I've certainly got over my injury from the final third of last season.
“I’m feeling really fit now and confident as well after playing back in midfield against West Ham United, I feel really good.
“My opportunities have been more on the left side but, I feel more at home and comfortable in the centre and in the Capital One Cup that’s where I've been able to play.
“Going back a year ago when I joined the style of play that the gaffer likes is one of the reasons I chose to come here and I think I've expressed myself in that style.”
