Gaffer impressed by first half performance but left frustrated as Sunderland edge win

In what was a heated affair at the Stadium of Light, Roberto Martinez was happy with the way Latics took the game to Sunderland.

“We started with a real confident look about us and to come here with the confidence that we had in the first half really speaks volumes.

“From our point of view the first half was a very good performance.

“We created some very good chances in the first half but the three clear ones we created we need to be taking.

“In terms of the majority of the game we played really well and kept Sunderland from proving a threat and they only really had one shot on goal and that’s the one they scored from.”

Despite the dismissal of Jordi Gomez, Martinez said it was the goal soon after and not the sending off that changed the game.

“In the second half the sending off really caused us problems because we conceded really early in the half as well.

“That is hard to take because we’ve had a decision as well which changes the game.

“Conceding the goal straight after the red card is what changed the game not the red card itself because we give ourselves a hard battle to get a positive result.”

With Everton on their way to the DW Stadium next Saturday, the gaffer called for focus on the next 90 minutes not the previous.

“After a game like this we understand that we need to improve our game.

“There’s nothing we can do now about the result and the main thing for us is that we focus on the next game and make sure that the first half performance is taken into the next 90 minutes.

“We have to show what we are made of next weekend because it is the game before the international break.”
