Latics and ASDA support fun run for cancer research

Wigan Athletic are urging supporters of all ages to take part in Wigan Rotary’s RUN4ALIFE this month – a fun run in aid of the Men Matter Appeal which funds men’s cancer research at Christies Hospital.

The Five Kilometre event starting at 12 noon for all the family, held at Haigh Hall Country Park, is now in its eighth year and has so far raised £70,000 for research into men’s cancers.

The club are delighted to be lending their support. Manager Roberto Martinez said: “Male cancer is an issue which has been in the news in our sport with people like Geoff Horsfield and John Hartson.

“When you hear about fit and healthy professional sportsmen being affected it brings it home how we are all vulnerable. As far as I’m concerned this is a very important charity for us to get behind and I’m delighted to be able to help in this way.”

Vice Chairman of Wigan Athletic Phil Williams said “We would like our supporters to really get behind this by taking part in a fun event that raises awareness and money for a really important cause.

“It would be wonderful to see hundreds of Latics shirts on the day of the event and help raise a record amount. I am sure our supporters won’t let us down.”

‘This event fits perfectly with ASDA’s charities of the year which are for men’s and women’s cancers’ said Simon O’Hara manager of the Wigan store ‘We are delighted to support this event and hope it is a great success’

The course, the same as is used for the ladies-only ‘Race for Life’, can be run or walked at whatever speed is necessary! There is also a 10Km event for the regular runners starting at 9.30 a.m. on the same day.

Venk Mani President of organisers Wigan Rotary, explained, “This really is a fun event for all the family and we are thrilled that Wigan Athletic and ASDA have given us their support.”

Entries can be made either at, ring 07813 471000 or can be made on the day
