Midfielder thanks team mate for late goal in tough game.

“It was a very tough game and I think the most important thing is that we got the point out of it late on,” said James McCarthy in the tunnel after the 1-1 draw at Loftus Road with Queens Park Rangers.

“It wasn’t a pretty game and it wasn’t easy to play in but getting points is essential for us and Shaun (Maloney) has popped up with an unbelievable free kick to grab us a massive point."

Maloney’s 94th minute free kick cancelled out Loic Remy’s stunning effort five minutes from time, and it didn’t come as a surprise to McCarthy.

“The goal is a piece of magic and he does that day in, day out in training and thankfully he pulled us out of a big hole yesterday.

“Conceding so late on was a blow for us but we were desperate not to be beaten so we’re really happy that Shaun scored when he did.

“The emotion at the time of our goal was brilliant and it could be a moment that really, really counts come the end of the season.”

McCarthy expressed the difficulty of the game but added just how important the late point could be.

“It was one of the toughest games we’ve had and I don’t think the pitch helped us at times because it was difficult to play the ball out wide and the ball just kept coming straight back at us.

“They really wanted the game and they needed to win to try and kick on so we always knew we were going to face a test.

“After the sending off it became a much harder game because they had two banks of four and made it really difficult for us by counter attacking.”

McCarthy went on to describe his mixed feelings from the result but, he believes it has set the team up well for the coming games.

“We’re gutted that we didn’t play well and we didn’t make the man advantage count.

“It would have been a massive three points for them but it turned into a huge point for us, especially with the FA Cup semi final coming up.

“The point gives us something to kick on from in the league once we return to league action against Man City.”
