Midfielder delighted to see Maloney make Latics tick in semi final.
Shaun Maloney received the Man of the Match award for his performance in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup semi final victory over Millwall.
Team mate James McCarthy believes it was more than just the Scotsman’s opening goal that earned him that accolade.
“I thought Shaun was outstanding because he made us tick on the ball and controlled the game from the middle.
“He made it hard for Millwall to defend because of his movement and his creativity and that really showed with his goal.
“The finishes from Shaun and Cal (McManaman) were of the highest quality and that’s what we’ve come to expect from them both.”
McCarthy went on to explain how much the victory and occasion meant to him and his family.
“I spoke to my Mum and Dad after the game and they were just over the moon,” said the 22-year-old.
“They’ve seen me play in a semi final before when I was younger at school so for them to then see me in a winning team in the FA Cup final must have been brilliant.
“It was an unbelievable achievement to win the game and especially in front of my family.”
As well as his pride for winning in front of his family, McCarthy expressed that it was for the fans too.
“The fans were a different class and they made themselves heard over the Millwall fans, it was a dream come true to play in front of such support.
“It’s something you dream of as a young kid to go and play in a stadium like that and I’m really proud to have achieved that with this club.
“It’s a huge thing for the club and everybody deserves this.”
