It is Latics second game on home soil in five days following on from Tuesday night’s draw against Doncaster Rovers. It is tempting to refer to Tuesday’s result as a disappointing one, although having been 2-0 down at the break, consensus would suggest that a point was a positive result.
But if Latics are to achieve an immediate return to the Barclays Premier League then Owen Coyle’s side cannot afford to fall too far adrift of the leaders, and playing Sunday they could be as far a seven points off top spot come kick off.
Middlesbrough arrive at the DW Stadium in indifferent form. An impressive away win at Charlton followed by defeat in the League Cup at home to Accrington. Last time out ‘Boro were hosts to Blackpool were the two sides produced a 1-1 draw.
‘Boro’s personnel include the highly rated Albert Adomah who was strongly linked with Latics in the summer and also the experienced defender Jonathan Woodgate who played over 100 games for Leeds, later moving on to Newcastle Utd, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hostspur and Stoke City.
Callum McManaman will serve the second of his three-match ban following his red card at Bournemouth last weekend. Meanwhile Gary Caldwell (hip), Ivan Ramis (knee) and Ali Al Habsi (shoulder) all continue to recover from their long-term injuries. Thomas Rogne has now moved outside onto the grass with his recovery and he should be available to compete for a place in the team in the not too distant future.
For 'Boro Jason Steele missed last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Blackpool with an ankle injury picked up against Charlton a week earlier. He will be assessed ahead of this game.
Seb Hines continues to recover from knee surgery during the summer.
