Wigan Athletic begin their campaign to return to the Barclays Premier League at the first time of asking with an opening day fixture against David Flitcroft's Barnsley at Oakwell.

Flitcroft joined Barnsley in January following the departure of Keith Hill who was sacked following the defeat by Blackburn after a run of only one win in 14 games.  But the Tykes went on to finish last season in decent form losing just two of their last nine games to secure their place in the Championship.

The Oakwell side have added to their squad in the summer including the high profile signings of Chris O'Grady from Sheffield Wednesday, former Liverpool youth team player Dale Jennings from Bayern Munich and the highly-rated 20-year-old Ghana striker John Cofie from Manchester United

There could also be one or two familiar faces on show for Barnsley including striker Jason Scotland and midfielder Tomasz Cywka.

There could be up to nine new signings making their debuts for Latics this Saturday and possibly more with Adam Buxton, Rakish Bingham, Danny Redmond and Nouha Dicko all having played some part in Coyle's pre-season teams.

Gary Caldwell, Ivan Ramis and Ali Al Habsi all continue to recover from the long term injuries while Thomas Rogne will be given until late in the week to rejoin the squad following the back injury that saw him leave the field against Dundee Utd last Saturday.

For Barnsley Paul Digby is currently struggling with a thigh strain and Kelvin Etuhu is unavailable according to manager David Flitcroft.
