Community Shield marks James McCarthy’s fourth trip to national stadium in four months.
If twice with Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup wasn’t enough, Latics’ Republic of Ireland midfielder added to his Wembley appearance tally 18 days after the cup final triumph when he and his international team mates took on England at the end of May.
This means that Sunday in the Community Shield against Manchester United it will be his fourth visit to the stadium in just a short space of time, an achievement that McCarthy said he was proud of:
“It’s always good to play at big stadiums and Wembley makes it for a great occasion.
“It’s four times now in the last few months that I’ll be going to Wembley and it is a little bit surreal but we’re all excited to go there and try and get another great result.
“I’m hungry to play on Sunday and pick up that fourth appearance at the stadium, but I’m no different from every other player in the squad because as footballers we always want to be in the team.”
With Saturday’s opening day Championship victory against Barnsley behind Latics, McCarthy believes it can be used to spur the team on against an opposition he knows will prove a tough test.
“We’ll look to use the game against Barnsley as a good springboard towards the weekend.
“It’s not going to be easy because we’re playing one of the best teams in the country, but we’ll give it our best shot.
“We know all about what Man United will bring to the game and we’ll be working hard focussing on them this week.”
McCarthy went on to say that winning more silverware for the club would provide another boost, especially so early in the season.
“It would be an incredible start to the season if we won a trophy.
“It’s up for grabs and we’re going to go to Wembley and try and bring the Community Shield back.
“There’s a real buzz about the training ground ahead of the game and it’s great to have a game like this on the horizon.”
Tickets for the Community Shield on Sunday 11 August are still available from the Wigan Athletic ticket office and are on sale until Friday.
