Norwegian defender talks about his return to the pitch yesterday afternoon.

Thomas Rogne lined up in defence yesterday for Latics’ Development Squad in their 4-0 victory against Wrexham at Christopher Park, making his first appearance on the pitch since picking up an injury at the end of July against Dundee United at the DW Stadium.

The pre-season friendly against the Scottish Premiership side was Rogne’s come back game from an injury itself and the defender admitted getting injured again made for a rough few weeks.

“It’s been tough mentally because I came back from an injury, played a game and then got injured again.

“It was very nice to play because it’s been a rough few weeks.

“It was a big blow for me to get injured in the Dundee United game but you’ve just got to pick yourself up.

“Injuries happen in football, I’ve probably fallen on my back thousands of times before and never had any problems with it but that time I suffered.”

After a few days of training and a month of recovery work, Rogne said he was fit and ready for yesterday’s game and excited to play again, praising the club’s medical team for their help.

“We’ve got a fantastic medical department and the sports science guys have been brilliant with me so I’ve got to praise them.

“It’s part of the job that when you’re injured you’ve just got to work on the psychological side of your game and make sure that you pick yourself up and don’t dig a hole for yourself.

“I’ve had a couple of good days training and to finally get a game was a nice feeling.”

Still excited from arriving at the club in the summer, the 23-year-old said he can’t wait to get more and more involved with the first team group.

“It’s still an incredible feeling to be here and I’ve been so happy ever since I signed.

“Of course you want to be a part of everything, playing with the team, training and having fun with the rest of the guys, but you can’t really do that when you’re stuck in the gym.

“I’ve been sat in the gym watching the guys training outside so it’s been great to get out there myself recently.”

Speaking about the performance and result yesterday against Wrexham, Rogne added:

“I feel good right now and yesterday it was a very good game to get into.

“We were the better team in the game and we played some good football.

“When you’re in command of a game like we were it’s important to keep it shut at the back because all it needs is a split second and Wrexham could have scored.

“We stayed very focussed in defence and that’s why this team hasn’t conceded a single goal so far this season.”

With a first full 90 minutes under his belt, Rogne said that he’s only looking in a single direction.

“Hopefully I can kick on now after getting these 90 minutes.

“It’s my aim to get into the first team but I know that sometimes you have to be patient and wait for your chance.

“When I get that chance I’ll have to take it and make sure I play well for the team.”
