Ali Al Habsi and Gary Caldwell feature in Development Squad friendly.Ali Al Habsi and Gary Caldwell made returns to the pitch this afternoon as Wigan Athletic's Development Squad drew 1-1 at Christopher Park against a Southport side which included former Latics' favourite Nathan Ellington.
Caldwell played just over an hour, while Al Habsi played the full 90 minutes, in his first piece of action since the final game of last season against Aston Villa at the DW Stadium.
On loan Manchester United forward Will Keane also featured for 45 minutes, with first team squad members Danny Redmond and Fraser Fyvie in the starting XI.
Josh Langley gave Latics the lead with a well taken effort on 32 minutes as he turned quickly in the area to fire home from a Redmond free kick, but former York and Fleetwood Town forward Richard Brodie equalised five minutes before half time, despite a suspicion of handball as he controlled to finish.
Al Habsi was called into action on a couple of occasions with some smart saves, including clawing a chipped effort out of the air and into his grasp in the second half.
Club Captain Caldwell was also called upon during the afternoon, as he battled against the physicality of Ellington in the first half.
On an afternoon of returns at the training ground, midfielder Jack Phillips made his first appearance of the season following a tough time with injury as he replaced Patrick Antelmi on 72 minutes.
