Latics lose out in second Central League Cup group game as Fleetwood claim 2-0 win.

Two of Fleetwood Town's first team squad players Jon Parkin and Matty Blair did the damage in Latics' second group stage game in the Central League Cup as the visitors ran out victors against a young Development Squad side.

Parkin's simple finish on 33 minutes edged a physical Fleetwood team ahead and as Latics looked to battle back late on, Blair struck with seven minutes remaining to finish the game.

Matthew Hamilton was drafted in late on for Latics as Joey Johnson missed out through illness, and Under 18 winger Jordan Flores was also called in for his first start in the Development Squad.

Former Preston North End forward Parkin caused early issues for Latics' defence with his physical presence up front as Fleetwood came quickly out of the blocks.

Latics dealt with the threat until the opening goal, when a cross from the left by Fleetwood full back Steve Jordan found Parkin over the top of the defence and the big forward simply tucked the ball into the bottom left corner on the stretch.

The bobble on the pitch proved difficult for John Henry's side as their usual instinct of progressive build-up play was thwarted by the conditions.

At half time Flores departed for Tim Chow, pushing Danny Redmond out onto the left side and with 15 minutes he'd created Latics' best chance of the afternoon.

Redmond slipped the ball between the Fleetwood centre backs allowing Patrick Antelmi and Guillermo Andres to beat the offside trap, with the latter whipping his attempt goalwards, only for Fleetwood stopper Dale Eve to block with his face.

As Latics tried and tried to press forwards for an equaliser, Ryan Meadows got caught in possession on the edge of his own area by Emmanuele Dieseruvwe, who in turn fed Blair through on goal as he fired into the bottom left corner to seal the tie.

Having beaten Tranmere Rovers 2-1 in the first group game of the Central League Cup, Latics will go on to face Morecambe in January and Carlisle United in February with the chances of progression still up for grabs.
