Marc-Antoine Fortune previews Wigan Athletic’s clash with Derby County.
On Sunday against Burnley, Marc-Antoine Fortune made his first league appearance for Wigan Athletic since meeting New Year’s Day opponents Derby County on December 1 at the DW Stadium in a 3-1 defeat.
The 32-year-old said a lot has changed over the month between games against the Rams, and warns that Latics should not be underestimated.
“There has been a lot of change since the last time we played against Derby County.
“We’re still working on the new style of play and new systems under the gaffer, but it’s coming together quite quickly.”
The change in style is something Fortune said poses new problems for opponents, such is the intense nature of Latics’ play:
“I think we pose a surprise to the teams higher up in the division because they’re full of confidence and don’t expect us to start so strong and so quickly.
“We’re showing early on in games that we’re going to make it difficult for our opponents and the more we do that then the better the results will become.
“I think teams at the top may underestimate us a little bit because of our league position, but we’re improving as a team and we’re looking to take advantage if that is the case.
“If any team thinks they’re going to come up against us and it be an easy game then they’re wrong.”
Looking back at Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Burnley, Fortune said that a result against Derby will turn previous draws into very positive points.
“Unfortunately we haven’t won our last two matches, but we haven’t lost either so we’re happy to be picking up points, it’s all about building at the moment.
“We won our two games previous to the 0-0 draws, and if we can win against Derby then the two draws turn into very good points for us.
“We’re not going to Derby to draw or not to lose, we’re going there to win and we’re looking forward to trying to prove a point.”
