17 December 2013

36 years ago Latics and Sheffield Wednesday met in the FA Cup second round.

Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday are preparing to meet competitively for the first time in 36 years when they face each other in the Championship on Wednesday 18 December at Hillsborough.

The last time Latics and the Owls faced each other was in the second round of the FA Cup as Ian McNeill's men secured a memorable victory, knocking out then Third Division Wednesday in Latics' final season as a Northern Premier League club.

Below we run down the events of the afternoon of 17 December 1977 and above you can see images from the match.

A trademark Maurice Whittle free kick sent the biggest FA Cup crowd of the day into a frenzy as Latics claimed a major scalp in the competition, knocking out English league 'giants' Sheffield Wednesday at Springfield Park.

Originally scheduled with a trip to Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League that afternoon, Ian McNeill's Latics instead welcomed the challenge of World Cup winner Jack Charlton and his Owls, sending out a much stronger line-up than the one that met Wednesday at Hillsborough two years previous.

The visitors started strongly in the match, but Latics powered through the early pressure and thought they'd taken the lead after just 30 minutes when Jeff Wright saw his effort turned in by Micky Moore after hitting the cross bar, only for the referee Mr N. Ashby to call a foul on Wednesday's goalkeeper.

Just over half an hour later Latics grabbed their crucial goal as Whittle's free kick forced its way through Wednesday's wall and into the net, sending the 13,000 plus crowd wild.

Riding the crest of a wave Latics held on for a historic victory and a place in the third round of the FA Cup.
