Latics face Derby County on New Year's Day
Derby County v Wigan Athletic
Sky Bet Championship
Wednesday 1 January 2014, kick off 3.00pm
Latics’ first game of the new year takes them to Derby County to face side they were comfortably beaten by at the DW Stadium exactly one month ago, a game that turned out to be Owen Coyle’s last in charge. However Wigan Athletic remain unbeaten under new manager Uwe Rosler with two wins and two draws his record so far.
Derby County are without doubt the form team not only in this division but across Europe with eight wins from their last nine fixtures, so this will certainly provide the biggest test yet for Latics’ new man in charge.
Jean Beausejour is available again after serving a one-match ban against Burnley for picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against former club Birmingham City on Boxing Day.
Manager Uwe Rosler reveled after the goalless draw with Burnley that he hadn’t intended to play Nick Powell for as long as he did but hoped he’d suffered no ill effects and would be available.
For our hosts, Michael Keane is expected to continue to deputise at the heart of the Rams’ back four in the absence of Richard Keogh (knee).
The defender's loan deal is due to expire after the fixture against the Latics, although Head Coach Steve McClaren has revealed his intent to extend the defender’s stay with the club.
Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick will once again be assessed ahead of the fixture as he looks to return to the squad following a bout of concussion.
Central defender Shaun Barker (knee) and Paul Coutts (knee) remain on the injury list and unavailable for selection, as they continue their rehabilitation.**
