Midfielder praises dominant performance but is determined for hard work to continue

Yesterday’s 3-0 victory away against Reading lifted Wigan Athletic out of the bottom three, something which James McCarthy was delighted with but insisted the team won’t become over confident.

“It’s so important to get out of the bottom three and try and build on positive results like this one and we’ve got 11 games left to make sure that we do that.

“They’re 11 cup finals and we want to try and get as high as we can in the league but we won’t be getting carried away now and we’ll get straight back to work to make sure we follow this through.”

McCarthy was delighted with the result at the Madejski Stadium but highlighted the nature of the performance by saying:

“The most important thing was getting the three points but the way we went about it was brilliant and we are all absolutely delighted.

“We knocked the ball about really well and the way we play was really highlighted and I think we went about our business really well.

“The sending off helped after that as well and with the player advantage we just played the ball around at our own pace and saw out a very well earned and deserved three points.”

Latics’ game plan worked out perfectly and McCarthy said things came together against the right opponent at the right time.

“It’s important to have got the three points especially away against Reading because it’s a confidence boost, it keeps up momentum and they have been on a good run recently which is something we need to stop considering their league position and ours.

“At half time we just all wanted to keep the intensity up and keep going because we knew that the game was far from over especially when Reading are at home and they carry on fighting when they go behind.

“We’ve seen that they can come back from 2-0 down because they’ve done it before and we were determined to get the third goal and kill them off.”
