Busy day ahead for Roberto as Spaniard looks to strengthen squad
It’s become one of the most manic days in the football calendar, but at 11.00pm tonight the TV cameras will be turned off, reporters and fans gathering outside training grounds will return home and the circus that is transfer deadline day will leave town until next season.
Roberto Martinez is hoping to quietly go about his business throughout the day, bolstering his squad for the final push before the most famous window in football slams shut this evening.
The Gaffer admits that he is still looking at many possibilities to add new faces to the group but only do so if the deal is right for the club, saying:
“I expect it will be a busy day, we’ve been working hard being the scenes to explore many possibilities which we will do until the deadline.
“But, as I’ve said in the past, we’re not going to sign players simply for the sake of it. We need to make sure that from now until the end of the season we are as strong as we can be, so we’ll try to add numbers to the group but bring real quality at the same time.
“Today could be an important day in making sure we approach the remainder of the season in the right manner.”
One deal that has been completed, and the fourth signing of the January transfer window, is that of Paul Scharner’s return to the club.
The Austrian arrives at the DW Stadium on loan from Hamburg until the end of the season, with Martinez explaining what the fans favourite will bring to the team:
“He’ll bring real continuity in what we’re trying to do at the club; we know him well from his previous spell here and he returns fully focused on helping the team and fighting in the last half of the season.
“He hasn’t played much football this season so he needs that time on the pitch, but he’s fit and has kept himself in very good condition and once he’s at his best he’s a powerful player who can be an important addition to us.
“It’s a romantic comeback in many ways and someone who can help to fill the gaps we’ve had at the back this season.”
