Gaffer brings in four new faces to Christopher Park

Wigan Athletic are delighted to announce the appointment of four new members of Owen Coyle’s backroom staff.

Sandy Stewart will take the role of Assistant Manager, having worked closely with Coyle at Bolton Wanderers, Burnley and St. Johnstone, whilst former Latics keeper Phil Hughes becomes the new Goalkeeping Coach.

Andy Mitchell has been appointed as Head Physiotherapist with James Barrow joining the Medical Team as Strength and Conditioning Coach.

All four worked closely at former club Bolton Wanderers, whilst Coyle, Stewart, Mitchell and Hughes were also together at Turf Moor with Burnley, and for James the move is a chance to team up with his father Graham Barrow who remains as First Team Coach, whilst Dennis Lawrence remains as Development Squad Coach.

Coyle said: “It was so important that we brought in the right personnel to take up key roles at the club and I’m delighted to bring in people who have proven themselves at the highest level and who I trust completely.

“I know they’ll come here and do everything in their power to bring success to Wigan Athletic, and I can’t ask any more than that.”

Stewart was a former team-mate of Coyle’s at Airdrieonians, before taking charge of the club under the new name of Airdrie United in 2002 and becoming his manager until Coyle became St. Johnstone Manager in 2005. Stewart joined him two years later and the pair went on to team up at Burnley and Bolton.

Phil Hughes returns to the club he last played for twenty-two years ago, having made 99 appearances following his arrival from Bury in 1987, as well as playing at Wembley in the Football League Centenary Tournament in 1988. The former Northern Ireland international continues his coaching career having previously worked at Leeds United, Bury, Burnley and Bolton.

Wigan Athletic can officially confirm that Graeme Jones, Inaki Bergara, Richard Evans and Kevin Reeves have left the club.
